Path of Exile’s endgame can be hard to figure out. Depending on your gameplay style and character build, there can be many confusing choices on how to proceed after the campaign. In this article, we’ll look at the Expedition mechanic, exploring how easy it is to get into, how cheap it is to get started, and how much currency you can make with a small investment.

How Does 'Expedition' Work in Path of Exile?

One of the four NPCs from the Kalguuran Expedition will spawn in the area, surrounded by various markers. Approaching them will allow you to start placing Explosives to excavate the area.

Any marker within the Explosives range will unearth monsters or chests. The Explosives detonate in the order you've placed them, and there is a maximum range between Explosives. There are also Remnants which add mods to monsters and chests spawned from the explosion and all subsequent explosions.

Any Artifacts you find from the Expedition will match the NPC that spawned. NPCs do not refresh their stock unless it is manually restocked, using specific currency items to do so:

  • Gwennen - Sells unidentified equipment which reveals its rarity and mods when purchased. She takes Broken Circle Artifacts and Astragali for restocks.

  • Tujen - Sells non-equipment items at the listed price, but they can be haggled down for lower. Tujen may make a counteroffer or even remove the item from sale. He takes Black Scythe Artifacts and Exotic Coinage for restocks.
  • Rog - Sells identified rare equipment. Before taking the item, he will make an offer to modify it for more Artifacts at different prices. You cannot skip an offer twice in a row. He takes Order Artifacts and Scrap Metal for restocks.

  • Dannig - Opens portals using Expedition Logbooks in the hideout. Sells Artifacts to the other three NPCs in exchange for Sun Artifacts. Restocking with Buried Medallion adds Artifacts with better exchange rates, reroll items, and/or Expedition Logbooks.

Path of Exile: How to Farm Expedition

The best way to farm Expedition is by running maps with open layouts like Dunes. This mechanic can be quite dangerous since the monsters get stacked with a lot of modifiers. A tanky build that has decent clear is recommended.

One of the best ways to farm Expedition includes using the Expedition Scarab of Archaeology to increase the Suffixes and Prefixes that Remnants have. You can also use an Expedition Scarab of Verisium Powder, which adds another 80% to the radius of Explosives. Last but not least, 2 Expedition Scarabs of Runefinding increase the Expedition monster markers by 100% each.

If you use the previously mentioned Scarabs, you’ll need a 100% guaranteed chance to spawn an Expedition from your Atlas tree. You don’t need to add anything from your map device. This is quite a cheap way to farm Expedition, as it costs only around 5 Chaos Orbs per map.

How to Set Up Your Atlas for Expedition in Path of Exile

The ideal way to set up your Atlas for Expedition would be to grab all Expedition nodes available. You can choose whether you use Extreme Archaeology or not, but it’s highly recommended as it saves a lot of time, and it’s easier to explode all chests at once. If you use Extreme Archaeology, place it in a way to avoid the damage immunity modifiers that counter your build.

With all the points left, you can go for some Scarab drop chance, as well as some Sulphite nodes if your character needs a bit more power. Here is a good example of an Atlas set up for Expedition by Empyriangaming, who’s been testing different league mechanics.
